How to Meditate for Beginners,
Tips & Techniques How to Meditate

Learning how to meditate for beginners, is a process of slowly and gently washing away the usual concerns and worries of the mind and body. You are embarking on a re-awakening process, an inward journey to your true inner self. Meditation frees you from your minds constant desire to think.

This is the greatest gift you can give yourself!

Just as there are many different personality types in the world, there are many meditation types. Regardless of the meditation style, each has the same ultimate purpose.

Preparing for Meditation - General Tips
  • Meditate after bathing.
  • Set a timer for a minimum of 10 minutes.
  • Sit or stand with your spine straight at all times.
  • Choose a quiet, clean space where you won't be disturbed.
  • Ask not to be disturbed, close your door and turn your phone off.
  • The best time to meditate is in the morning before breakfast, in the evening before dinner or just before bedtime.

Techniques How to Meditate

The objective of each one of these meditation techniques is for the mind to become focused on one thing only, rather than its usual habit of racing around, jumping from one thought to another. Have a read through the three basic meditation exercises and choose the style you're most attracted to.

Concentrative Meditation
One simple meditation style is by concentrating on a single, still flame. First of all, ensure you choose a dark space, free from drafts. Then, concentrate your gaze on the flame. If you like, you can imagine any negativities being consumed and released from your consciousness.

Breath Meditation
This versatile technique can be practiced anywhere. As you inhale and exhale, feel the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Observe your lungs expanding and contracting. Notice the breath rising and falling. Now allow your attention to follow the breaths up and down movement.

Visualization Meditation
After you have seated yourself comfortably, gaze at a special image or symbol for 5 minutes. Next, close your eyes and fix your attention on your heart for 5 minutes and visualize the image or symbol residing in there. Continue until you have reached your predetermined set time.

After Meditating - General Tips
  • Lie down with your arms by your sides, be still and relax.
  • Refrain from speaking afterwards, allowing the benefits to absorb.
  • Remember you are just beginning, accept your initial experience (whatever it is) and do not be tempted to rate it. Just enjoy it.

New habits take time to stick. I use 3 days, 3 weeks and 3 months as milestones to calculate how I am going with taking on a new habit. When you make it to 3 months you can probably rest assured that you have made it to your new goal to implement your habit.
